FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

What is Kenpo 5.0?

American Kenpo version 5.0 is the hybrid of the last generation version of American Kenpo taught directly from Senior Grand Master Ed Parker to Jeff Speakman and ground fighting brought into the equation by several of Mr. Speakman’s students training and experiences as well as Mr. Speakman's continued studies of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from his instructor Mr. Todd Nathanson.   Approximately 30 new techniques have been created replacing dated or in-congruent techniques within the existing system.  In addition, another 30 techniques have been altered in varying degrees to accommodate the same thinking.

It is important to recognize that this is not grappling or cage fighting, but an expanding philosophy of Kenpo to produce the Kenpo ground system coupled with training drills and sparring techniques.  It is modifying the existing 4.0 system while remaining completely within the combat models and thinking of American Kenpo to address this increasing and prevalent void in the Kenpo world. By keeping within these models of Kenpo we have been able to develop a system combining the best of these two worlds to give our students the maximum ability to deal with the very real possibilities of becoming involved in these kinds of altercations.

In addition it allows us to continue to develop ourselves within the mind-body-spirit paradigm of a true martial spirit to reach a higher level of individual performance and sustained excellence and therefore strengthening the group as a whole.

What do I need to know as a parent or observer of classes?

We ask that parents and students that are watching classes in session are as quiet as possible so that we do not disturb the students. The students need all of their focus and attention directed to their training. The talking loudly, little kids running and crying/talking creates chaos in the classroom and disrupts the entire learning process of the class. We kindly ask that anyone that needs to talk and/or answer a call please step outside to do so. We also ask that all young children be kept quiet and in the constant supervision of a parent/guardian.   We thank you again for you understanding.

We would like our students to be clean and tidy and keep the classroom smelling fresh and deodorized. We ask that students please wash their uniforms on a regular basis in order to keep them clean and smelling good. A good routine of washing your uniform might be at least once a week or once every two weeks at the very most. During classes the students come into contact with each other quiet often, therefore a good personal hygiene is very important. Another good hygienic act would be to keep all nails cut short and clean. (That way we avoid any scratching).

Lastly, we would like to remind parents that flu season is here and here at the studio we get a large number of people coming and going everyday. If you/your child is sick please keep them home in order to avoid passing on any unhealthily germs to other students, parents, and instructors( please be sure to call in and inform us that you/your child is sick and will not be able to attend class that day). Thank you for your understanding and aid in keeping your studio clean and sanitized!

What is the order of the Universal Kid's Colored Belt Ranking System?

Do I need to take off my jewelry for classes?

Certain types of jewelry can create a problem as they tend to snag on clothing and break.  These types of jewelry can also cause injury to one's self or another classmate.  In order to keep our students safe, please take off all jewelry before class, including: earrings, large rings, toe rings, watches, and bracelets.  If you have a question or concern about this, talk with your instructor.  Your cooperation is appreciated.

What is a belt test, and do I have to do that?

A belt test usually occurs on a set date with a group of your peers, in which you demonstrate all the self-defense techniques and basic strikes and blocks associated with that belt.  Instructors will schedule a student to test only when he/she is ready, and have already proven a solid understanding of the requirements.  The belt tests are only required if the student is interested in progressing through the Kenpo system and wants to achieve rank.
